The smartphone market in China is seeing growth, recently boosted by the 618 shopping festival with discounts. According to Counterpoint, smartphone sales in China increased by 6.8% in the week from June 18 to 24 compared to the same period last year. The increase was due to discounts offered by most OEMs, as well as the extension of the promotional period this year.

The shopping festival, created by JD Worldwide, takes place annually and begins on July 18, hence its name “618.” Huawei was the top seller during the “618” period, achieving an impressive year-on-year growth of 42.4%. Demand for the new Mate 60 and Pura 70 series 5G smartphones remained strong, despite Huawei offering the smallest discounts among major manufacturers.

Vivo ranked second with a growth of over 12.6%, thanks to the strategic launch of new models across price points both before and during the festival. Before the event, the company launched the flagship X100s series, the affordable Y200 series, and the mid-range iQOO Neo 9s Pro, and during the event, the mid-range S19 series. All of this helped boost sales during the period.

Xiaomi also saw a strong 12.6% sales growth, offering discounts of up to $139 and increasing sales of mid-range and premium phones, with the Redmi K70 being the best-selling model.

HONOR, by offering significant discounts and launching a new series of mid-range smartphones, notably the HONOR 200, increased sales by 4.3% year-on-year. Popular value-for-money products such as the HONOR X50 also contributed significantly to this growth.

Apple, thanks to aggressive promotions and an extended sales week, saw a 2.7% increase over 2023. The company offered unprecedented discounts of up to $326 on its devices to attract consumers, which helped it fend off competition from Huawei in the premium segment.

It is noted that given the positive dynamics observed since the beginning of the year, experts expect that the growth of the Chinese smartphone market in 2024 will be modest but sustainable.
