When Micron announced plans to build two new U.S. factories in 2022, it planned to have them operational “by the end of the decade.” This week, the company gave them a more precise start date: The Idaho factory is scheduled to begin production in fiscal 2027, and the New York facility is scheduled to begin production in fiscal 2028.

Micron’s fiscal year 2027 begins in September 2026, so the new Idaho fab is expected to begin operations between September 2026 and September 2027. The company’s fiscal year 2028 begins in September 2027, so the New York fab is likely to begin operations between September 2027 and September 2028. In addition to the objective timeframes required for construction and pre-production, the on-going date will be significantly impacted by the dynamics of DRAM demand.

Micron’s fiscal 2024 capital expenditure plan is approximately $8 billion, with wafer fab spending down from last year. The company will spend about $3 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 on fab construction, new equipment, and manufacturing upgrades.

The company plans to significantly increase capital expenditures in fiscal 2025, planning to allocate about 30% of revenue to technology and manufacturing capacity development. The company expects its quarterly capital expenditures to exceed $3 billion, which will amount to about $12 billion in fiscal 2025. Funding for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) assembly and testing, as well as construction of manufacturing and server facilities, will increase significantly.

In fiscal year 2025, more than $2 billion will be spent on building new plants in Idaho and New York. Construction on the Idaho plant is already well underway. Construction on the New York facility has not yet begun as the company works through the state’s regulatory and permitting processes.
