Variety reports that Legendary Pictures’ upcoming film based on the Street Fighter fighting game series has a firm release date despite recent developments at the top of the project.

A new Street Fighter film was confirmed last spring, with brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on the horror film Talk to Me, set to direct.

Last week, the Hollywood Reporter, citing its sources, reported that the Philippou brothers are no longer working on the Street Fighter film – due to scheduling conflicts (among other things), the directors left the project.

Despite the loss of its directors, the film’s distributor, Sony Pictures, was prepared to announce a release date for Street Fighter. The film will debut in U.S. theaters on March 20, 2026.

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding the director, Legendary’s new Street Fighter adaptation still has neither a confirmed screenwriter (the plot of the film is also shrouded in mystery) nor a cast.

The new film is not the first attempt to adapt Street Fighter. In 2009, 20th Century Fox released Streetfighter, and in 1994, Street Fighter with Jean-Claude Van Damme was released.

Both films are considered flops, although the 30-year-old film brings in “tens of millions of yen” (hundreds of thousands of dollars) annually for Capcom. It’s not a huge amount by the publisher’s standards, but it demonstrates interest in the series beyond the games.
